COLOUR OF SOUND

Hear the colour of your frequency.

Every tone carries a light within.

Choose a tone on the sound wheel. You hear it softly, and the room fills with its colour – the colour of its landscape and the colour it would have if it became light. Or let the Spectrum Journey carry you: a small melody that wanders through all ten tones.

Listen quietly – headphones make it most beautiful.

THE LIGHT OCTAVE

Double a tone – again and again.

At some point it becomes light.

One octave higher means vibrating twice as fast. Double 528 Hz exactly 40 times and you arrive at 580.5 terahertz – right in the middle of visible light, at 516 nanometres. That is green. This gives each of our tones a second, quiet colour.

A beautiful thought experiment, not physics of effect: sound is a vibration of the air, light an electromagnetic wave. The octave is the bridge we build between them.

528 Hz × 240 = 580.5 THz → 516 nm

HOW SOUND AND COLOUR MEET

Three bridges between hearing and seeing

For centuries people have searched for the colour of music.

I · Mathematics

The octave as a bridge

A tone and its octave sound like siblings to our ear. Double the vibration around 40 times and it reaches the range of visible light, between about 400 and 790 terahertz. This gives every tone a calculated colour – a thought model that still inspires musicians and painters today.

II · Perception

High tones shine brighter

Most people link high tones with bright colours and low tones with dark ones – in 2011 researchers even found this link in chimpanzees. Some people truly see sounds as colours; this is called synaesthesia. That is why our low tones wear the colours of the earth, and our high tones the colours of water, sky and light.

III · Art

From the rainbow to the light keyboard

In 1704 Isaac Newton divided the rainbow into seven colours – like the seven notes of a musical scale. Around 1725 Louis-Bertrand Castel imagined a colour harpsichord, and in 1910 Alexander Scriabin wrote a part for a light keyboard into “Prometheus”, meant to bathe the hall in colour.

THE SOUL SPECTRUM

Ten tones, twenty colours

On the left, the colour of the landscape in which we experience the tone. On the right, its light octave. Tap a tone to hear it.

COLOUR BREATH · 3 MINUTES

Breathe in the colour.

A small ritual for in between. The circle grows for four seconds – breathe in and imagine the colour of your tone filling you. For six seconds it becomes small again – breathe out and let go. Eighteen breaths, carried by 528 Hz.
